About this destination

What you will find in the Western Desert

Bahariya is an oasis depression about 370 kilometres southwest of Cairo, roughly four hours by road. It is a working agricultural settlement of palm groves and hot springs rather than a resort, and it functions as the gateway to the desert beyond.

South of the oasis the landscape changes twice. The Black Desert is a field of volcanic hills capped in dark dolerite that gives the sand its colour. Past it, the White Desert is a chalk plateau that wind erosion has cut into freestanding formations — mushrooms, towers and shapes that look deliberately carved, bright white against the sand. Crystal Mountain, a ridge of quartz, sits between the two.

This is a camping trip rather than a day trip. The standard pattern is a 4x4 out from Bahariya in the afternoon, dinner and a night under canvas among the formations, and the desert at sunrise before driving back. It gets genuinely cold after dark from November to February.

Good to know

Bahariya / White Desert, explained

The White Desert is the most photographed landscape in Egypt that is not a monument. It lies in the Farafra depression of the Western Desert, reached through Bahariya Oasis, and its chalk formations are the eroded remains of a seabed that covered the area millions of years ago.

The trip is almost always run as an overnight: four hours by road from Cairo to Bahariya, then an hour or so by 4x4 through the Black Desert and past Crystal Mountain, camping among the formations and returning the next day. Doing it as a day trip means fourteen hours of driving for two hours of desert, which is why very few people do.

Winter nights fall below 5°C and summer days pass 40°C, so October to April is the practical season, with the shoulder months the most comfortable. There is no accommodation in the White Desert itself — the camp is the accommodation.

Your questions

About 370 kilometres to Bahariya Oasis, roughly four hours by road, then another hour or so by 4x4 into the desert itself. It is far enough that the trip is normally run as an overnight rather than a day trip.
In practice, yes. The formations are at their most striking at sunset and sunrise, and a day trip would mean around fourteen hours of driving for a short time on the ground. Camps are simple — tents, bedding and a cooked dinner over a fire.
A stretch of volcanic hills south of Bahariya whose surfaces are covered in dark dolerite fragments, giving the sand a black cast. It is passed on the way to the White Desert, and the contrast between the two is part of the point of the trip.
October to April. Summer daytime temperatures exceed 40°C with no shade, and in deep winter the desert drops below 5°C overnight. The shoulder months either side are the most comfortable for camping.
Warm layers for the night whatever the season, closed shoes, a head torch and more water than you think you need. Camps provide tents, bedding and food, but there is no power and no phone signal for most of the route.
