What you will find in Cairo & Giza
Cairo and Giza sit on opposite banks of the Nile and work as one destination. On the Giza plateau stand the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built around 2500 BC, with the Great Sphinx below them and the Grand Egyptian Museum a few minutes away — the largest archaeological museum built for a single civilisation, and the home of the complete Tutankhamun collection.
Across the river, Cairo holds three more cities inside itself. Islamic Cairo runs from the Citadel of Salah al-Din and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali down through Khan el-Khalili, a market trading since the fourteenth century. Coptic Cairo, a short drive south, holds the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Saqqara and Memphis, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser predates Giza by a century, are forty minutes further out.
Most travellers give Cairo and Giza two to three days. One day covers the pyramids and the museum, a second covers Islamic and Coptic Cairo, a third reaches Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. Traffic is the real constraint here, not distance — an early start is worth more than a long day.
Cairo & Giza, explained
Cairo is the largest city in Africa and the Arab world, and Giza — its neighbour across the Nile — holds the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. Together they are where almost every Egypt itinerary begins, because the airport, the pyramids and the national collections are all in the same place.
The Giza plateau sits about 45 minutes from central Cairo depending on traffic, and the Grand Egyptian Museum is on the edge of it, roughly two kilometres from the pyramids. Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili are all on the east bank and combine comfortably into a single day.
Our Cairo and Giza tours are private: your own guide, your own vehicle, and a pace you set. That matters more here than anywhere else in Egypt, because the sites are spread out and the difference between a good day and a wasted one is usually the order you visit them in.
